Discovering Self-Mastery

Read Time: 4 Minutes
Message from the author
3 things from me this week. 1) I need to better plan for when I am traveling and create a set routine. specifically, when flying and working through the week - a few lessons to takeaway, but that's ok - we are here now. 2) Growth is definitely on the cards for MAKER - my goal is to grow the audience but maintain it in a way that focuses on quality rather than quantity. 3) I am starting to notice through writing Newsletters that my passion for topics (whilst about health and wellbeing) is around the Mindset and Behaviors needed to achieve them, along with the tools or systems to support. Going to continue to zero in on Mindset - why we behave a certain way, what drives successful people to do what they do and what we can take away in order to do the same.
Issue # 5 is just a summary of more to come on this Topic - we are only scratching the surface.
You know what the problem is with this topic?
Not many of us really understand what self-mastery is.
It sounds a bit woo woo or philosophical donât you think?
Imagine talking to a friend and saying - Hey⌠I am going to start working on Mastering Myself lol.
No doubt they will look at you with that strange face and say - âYeah, Righto Mate!â
But⌠Thatâs the main issue here. This is what can hold us back.
It isnât really ânormalâ to talk about Mastery in most circles, right?
Our goal is to change that moving forward.
If we can bring ourselves to go beyond the surface, there is a really cool world to explore here - with ideas and thoughts that can move you to align with becoming the best version of YOU.
Letâs discover some of these ideas on what can be done to become the Masters of our own Universe.
The Gift That Keeps Giving
The pursuit of Self-Mastery is like a gift you give to yourself that you get to open every day. Itâs like the gift the keeps giving.
They say that the greatest power one can possess is not the power to control other people or environments, but the power over your own self.
Philosopher Friedrich Nietzche said it best:
Mastering the self is the foundation over all other things you have, and it is the one you need to focus on first in order to achieve greatness.
My Mindset Shift
By no means am I a master of self. I, just like most, have a lot to learn in this space, but for me it is the pursuit of Self-Mastery that I feel places me in the same position as those who are really doing their thing out here.
What is Self-Mastery?
Simply put - it is self-control.
The ability to maintain discipline and steer our future to the one we choose.
It requires having a vision for our future self and applying the will to realize that vision.
Self-Mastery is a commitment to yourself toward never-ending improvement.
Scared or overwhelmed?
You should feel like that, particularly if itâs not normal for you to think in this way.
As I say in these situations - lean into it my friend, that feeling is just your comfort zone talking.
One thought I would like to share that helped my mindset shift - is changing how I speak or set my intentions for the future.
Try this âŚ
Instead of saying âI want to be Xâ change it to âI will become Xâ. Becoming something vs wanting to become something requires a different type of mentality and energy.
I try not to want anything. I am moving toward becoming.
7 Stages & 7 Skills
As you can see - 4 to 5 minutes is definitely not enough time to cover this Topic - I could actually write a book or a course on this and still not cover it all. (HmmmâŚ.đ)
Below is a summary of the stages to Self-Mastery. Will look to break down the details in future Newsletters. Right now, my aim is to bring awareness.
The Self-Mastery Pyramid - 7 Stages:
Use this as your guide to assess where you are vs what areas you are working vs what you should be working on in your pursuit to reach the top. This pyramid highlights the 7 Stages to Self-Mastery.

Self-Awareness (some say this is the key to Self-Mastery)
Seeing yourself clearly and objectively through reflection
Self-Exploration
Looking at your own thoughts, feelings, behaviors, motivators and asking WHY
Self-Discovery
Finding your authentic self. Learning more about yourself and who you are.
Self-Understanding
Understanding and accepting the way you are
Self-Love
Taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others.
Self-Transformation
Allowing yourself to change into the person you desire to be.
Self-Mastery
Is the by-product of the previous 6 stages.
7 Skills that will help you along the way:
Will repeat this one - Self-Awareness is actually a skill you will need to unlock the rest.
Self-Discipline - self-explanatory this one.
Emotional Control. Our emotions can take over at times - practice maintaining control.
Goal Setting - I like to call it goal design. Designing your ideal life sounds cooler and more creative.
Positive Self-Talk. Be kind to yourself - be your motivator.
Time Management -need to build structure and give yourself a âno excuseâ plan.
Stress Management - Mindfulness practices, training, walking, yoga is some of the many tools to help develop this skill.
Whatâs Next?
If you have been reading my previous Newsletters, then you would start to notice that we have been touching on a lot of these topics over the last 5 weeks.
Self-Mastery is the holistic approach, the grand vision and being really clear on this ultimate vision first will help set the tone for everything else to follow.
For you:
Take some time to review the stages - and reflect on where you are within each stage of the pyramid. Write it down if that helps and set goals in each area that you would like to work towards or improve.
Also ... review the skills that support your pursuit to greatness. Are there areas you need to work on to ensure that you give yourself the best opportunity to stay the course over a long period of time?
One thing from me:
I am currently in a position to grow MAKER and will need your help to do so. If these Newsletters have been helping you in any way - then I believe they could help someone else.
If you are reading this via email - please forward to that 1 person you feel will benefit from reading and joining the MAKER Movement.
If you are reading online, please send the link to that 1 friend or family member.
Thatâs it from me this week.
As always - appreciate you all and thanks for the feedback over the last few weeks. Keep it coming and great to hear your stories.
Until next week.
